In the framework of a cooperation with the archaeologists in charge of the Ifri n'Ammar cave excavations (Dr. Josef Eiwanger, Dr. Abdesalam Mikdad), a field trip with geography students of the University of Cologne was carried out during spring 2012.
These field campaigns serve as preparation for the second phase of the CRC 806 and aims at reconstructing the palaeogeography and the palaeoenvironment during the last 200 ka in the direct vicinity of the Ifri n'Ammar cave and, more globally, in NE Morocco. To achieve this goal, we prospected and investigated different geo-archives such as (i) wadi bank deposits directly below the Ifri n'Ammar cave, (ii) Holocene and Pleistocene fluvial terraces in the lower reaches of the Oueds Kert and Moulouya, and (iii) coastal deposits in and next to the Lagoon of Nador.
