During the penultimate week of August, the GSGS (the Graduate School of Geoscience) organized a Summer School on ‘Dates and Rates of Change in the Quaternary’ in Blankenheim near Cologne. The courses were given by speakers not only from Cologne University including members of the CRC 806 such as Tibor Dunai, Janna Just, Georgina King and Stephanie Kusch, but also by speakers from the UK such as Rachel Smedley from Aberystwyth University, Fin Stuart from Glasgow University and Peter Abbott from Swansea University.
PhD students (including CRC 806 members Jasmijn van’t Hoff and David Strebler) and post-doctoral researchers from all around the world participated in this Summer School. Apart from learning about recent methodical advances, it presented a unique opportunity to exchange with people from a variety of backgrounds facing similar research challenges. In addition to lectures on different dating methods, the summer school also included a day-long practical analysis of deep water drill data and a field trip to the Laacher See and the ‘Lavakeller’ in Mendig.
