German Mesolithic Workgroup in Wuppertal: 26th Annual Meeting (March – 10th-12th 2017)

The 26th annual Mesolithic Conference will be held in the Orangerie in Hardt Park in Wuppertal from 10-12 March 2017. The conference is being organised and hosted by Annabell Zander M.A., PhD student at the University of York, and Dr. Birgit Gehlen, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Collaborative Research Centre 806, Project D4 at the University of Cologne. The diverse programme includes 23 academic talks and eight poster presentations which are dealing with regional and international themes surrounding the Final Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Early Neolithic. We have planned a workshop entitled “How do we define the Mesolithic today?” for Fri afternoon. This workshop will deal with a critical evaluation of the division between the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. Furthermore, Dr. Erich Claßen and Priv.Doz. Dr. Jörg Orschiedt will deliver a public talk on the region’s Stone Age points of interest, including the Blätterhöhle, which is planned for Sat evening.

The excursion reflects the theme of the workshop and is planned for Sun. We will start at the famous multi-period cave site “Blätterhöhle” in Hagen where the oldest human fossils in Westphalia were found. We will then head to the Monrepos Archaeological Research Centre and Museum for Human Behavioural Evolution in Neuwied. One of the highlights of this conference will be the guided tour with the Historic “Kaiserwagen” of the suspended railway through Wuppertal. The suspended railway which was built in 1901 is the oldest elevated railway with hanging cars in the world and remains unique to this day. So far more than 50 academics from six different European countries have registered for this conference.
