Project E9: Materiality and Agency
Methodology of Philosophy
History and Theory of Science
Experience and Concept (working title)
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Thiemo Breyer / Prof. Dr. Alexander Schnell
All scientific work is in itself conceptual, i.e. theories cannot be derived from experimentation and observation alone. The human capability to conceptualise its lifeworld does not stop at the boundary of scientific thought, but rather finds its methodological saturation within empiric scientific research. But commonly this empiric research strategy does not offer any answer on how to rise from experience to concepts in the field of the humanities and especially philosophy, for which it is rather obscure what an appropriate empiric basis could be in the first place.
Since some of the widespread goals of the CRC lie directly in such fields of knowledge, first and foremost regarding our concomitant project E9, it is imperative to also reflect upon the methodological approach governing said research.
To achieve this, I concern myself with an historiographic analysis in order to sum up the main constraints a contemporary methodological account has to face, before trying to flesh out such a methodology stemming in particular from early continental and analytical philosophy.
