Environmental Response on Climate Events in the Levant, Near East and SE Europe during the Last 200 ka Based on Long Continental Records
PhD Research Topic
Working Title: Spatial and Temporal Palaeoclimate Reconstructions over Europe Using Multiple Proxies
Supervisor: Prof Dr. Andreas Hense
This thesis considers mostly speleothems and lake sediment cores as paleoclimate proxies. The isotopic composition in speleothems depends, among others, on precipitation amount and temperature. The pollen distribution in lake sediment cores are an indicator for near surface climate variables in the past. Therefore, a combination of both climate proxies could be beneficial. Thus, a common age system for speleothems and sediment cores is going to be developed. This is done by different kind of age models. After that, the procedure of dynamic time warping is used to obtain a connection between these models. The data gained can be interpreted as consistent observations. Simulations from paleoclimate models are then considered as ensemble runs. With techniques from climate and weather prediction, the observations can be used for an assimilation of these simulations.
