During this year’s „Day of Research“ (November 19th, 2017) in the Neanderthal Museum at Mettmann, scientists of the A- and C-Cluster presented insights into their current archaeological, geoscientific and geoarchaeological research to the wider public. Such occasions are unique for visitors and researcher alike; presenting research face-to-face with the public is challenging but also valuable.
The question of human mobility was topic of the information desk of Project A1. An application of a computer model simulating possible migration routes was presented, as well as various geoarchaeological field and survey methods used in our research area in Egypt. Research from the Eastern Rift of Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula were shown by the C-Cluster. In this context, different sediment samples from archaeological sites were prepared as thin-sections, ready for a micromorphological analysis. By a look through the microscope it was possible to see even small components of the remains of archaeological sites – e.g. chips of flints, charcoals and plant remains.
