E3 Kick-off Workshop “Perspectives on spatial mobility of hunter-gatherers”, 14th–15th December 2017

During the current phase of the E3 Project (2017–2021), the researchers aim at a cross-cultural comparison of internal models of hunter-gatherer mobility. The research is focused on two related key issues: “decision-making” and “mapping and orientation”.

Researchers from several countries and disciplines (African Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Digital Humanities, Geography, and Sociology) presented their research at the workshop.

At the first day with the subject “Horizons of decision making”, the participants discussed topics such as different approaches to decision making, people’s strategies under uncertainty, the evolution of rationality, decision making as a cultural practice and the use of agent-based simulations in assessing the often complex outcomes of multiple individual decisions.

The second day dedicated to “Cultural maps and hunter-gatherers’ being in the world” aimed at critically assessing “cultural maps” produced with and for hunter-gatherer communities, considering also spatial orientation and environmental perceptions.
