Between 25th and 28th of November 2012, the RWTH Aachen University was host to 65 experts from 16 countries for a workshop entitled "Last Glacial palaeogeography and archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Eastern European loess belt".
This workshop was organized in the frame of subproject B1 by the Chair of Physical Geography and Geoecology at the Department of Geography of the RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with the Institute of Prehistoric Archaeology at the University of Cologne. The papers presented at the workshop focused on archaeological finds and features in the context of landscape and climatic evolution for the last 90,000 years. Both parameters influenced the migration of early humans on their way to Europe. New results on the Last Glacial environmental landscapes were compared with ecological niches which served as preferred habitats of early humans. A lively discussion developed between geoscientists and archaeologists, furthering our joint comprehension of this important topic.
The workshop ended with a field trip through the landscape formation and the history of Aachen.
