This November, PhD student Janina Bösken travelled to the University of Aberystwyth in faraway Wales to attend a workshop about everything there is to know about luminescence dating. The main focus was set on discussions among colleagues from all over the world to enhance the scientific exchange. The basics Principals and key choice that need to be made prior to dating a sample were reviewed. Sampling strategies and other site-specific considerations were discussed, and one session dealt with the challenges left to unravel for young researchers, such as extending the age range further back, understanding the mechanics behind age discrepancies between different grains sizes, and broader application of luminescence dating to geomorphological processes.
Altogether it was a very successful and inspiring week in a lovely town at what feels like the end of the world.
